Brief description
The Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC) is a private institute devoted to basic biological and biomedical research, and to graduate training. Founded by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in 1961, the IGC was majorly restructured in 1998 to form the institute that runs nowadays. The IGC is free from hierarchical structure, with small independent research groups working in an environment designed to foster interaction and cooperation. The scientific programme of the IGC is multidisciplinary, including Cell and Developmental Biology, Evolutionary Biology, Immunology, Host-Pathogen Interactions, Disease Genetics, Plant Biology, Neurosciences, Theoretical and Computational Biology. The technological platforms of the institute are constantly updated to the highest standards, ready to explore new scientific ideas, and are run by highly qualified and experienced support staff. These platforms include, as core facilities, animal house and plant facilities, advanced microscopy, electron microscopy and flow cytometry facilities, transgenics, genomics, gene expression, bioinformatics, and histopathology units. The IGC runs international PhD programmes structured to offer students the best conditions to find and pursue research on original questions in the biological sciences, promoting intellectual breadth and independent scientific thinking. To promote the values of science in society, scientific literacy, and the active participation of citizens in scientific research, the IGC runs a dedicated science communication and outreach programme that supports the engagement of IGC researchers, staff and PhD students in a dialogue with the society.
