Brief description

The Technology Transfer Unit of the University of Aveiro (UATEC) is a functional unit of the University of Aveiro (UA). Its mission is to support UA in its aim of being a national excellence centre of knowledge creation and dissemination, through 1) intellectual property management and prosecution; 2) promotion and valorization of its technologies in the marketplace; 3) university / industry liaison; 4) promotion of entrepreneurship and support of technology-based company creation. UATEC was created in 2006, having as its primary goal knowledge valorization. As a result, it engages in value adding activities such as start-up and spin-out creation, business alliances establishment, sponsored research and collaboration contracts support, IP protection and prosecution, licensing, marketing, among others. This Unit covers four main interrelated functional areas – Intellectual Property Management, Licensing, Entrepreneurship, and Industry Liaison. • Intellectual Property Management - This area focuses on management, prosecution and information dissemination activities for intangible assets, namely patents, trademarks, utility models, design, and copyright. These activities are applied both to national and international levels. • Licensing - The licensing process aims to bring into the marketplace technologies developed at UA with IP and commercial value, either by exclusive or non-exclusive licensing agreements or by selling the IP rights to companies interested in commercializing the technologies. Broadly speaking, the licensing strategy comprises technology evaluation, valuation and marketing, as well as negotiation, and post-negotiation activities involving the potential licensees • Entrepreneurship - This functional area fosters entrepreneurship through four main activities: business development, capital sourcing, mobility and training. The first one focuses on start-up and spin-out creation, business planning, and technology transfer promotion. Capital sourcing focuses on networking with venture capital firms, business angles and grant programs. Mobility concerns partnerships and student internships in existing companies, and, lastly, training comprises technology based entrepreneurship courses and business plan competitions that take place at UA • Industry Liaison - This functional area aims to promote and maintain the university-company connection. Requests from companies, which intend to develop collaborative research with UA, are received on a regular basis. Some other companies, on the other hand, envision R&D services provided by the University. UATEC promotes and makes the follow up of these contacts and helps in the contractualization phase, contributing therefore to the promotion of collaborative R&D and sponsored research contracts, among other University-company collaboration strategies.
