Brief description

INEB - Instituto de Engenharia Biomédica is a private non-profit association with the statute of public interest, founded in June 1989 by six institutions, including the University of Porto (UPorto). The Mission of INEB is to generate knowledge, by promoting research, advanced training and technology transfer in biomedical engineering. INEB’s Vision is to be an international reference in the application of integrated engineering solutions to improve human health. INEB has adopted the motto “Engineering for life” to express its involvement in the development of technologies and devices aimed at improving patients’ quality of life and the continuous learning with living organisms. In 2000 the IBMC.INEB was granted the statute of Associate Laboratory by the Ministry for Science and Technology. In 2008 IBMC, INEB and IPATIMUP (Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology of the UPorto) formed the consortium I3S (Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde – Institute for Research and Innovation in Health). INEB is also a founding member of Health Cluster Portugal (HCP) and a member of the following European Networks: Nanomedicine (European Technology Platform) and the European Institute for Biomedical Imaging Research (EIBIR). Transdisciplinarity is a distinctive feature of INEB. Integrative research, involving specialists in biomaterials, tissue regeneration, nanomedicine, bioimaging, medical signals, geoepidemiology, biology, and medicine has brought international recognition to the institute.INEB’s research activities are run under a large Integrated Program on Biomedical Engineering for Regenerative Therapies and Cancer, which is also deeply rooted in the close existing collaboration with IPATIMUP and IBMC. Ultimately, the goal is to lead to the development of combination products that will improve quality of life, decrease mortality and boost national economy. The Program is focused on the following areas of clinical application: Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Obstetrics, Cardiology, Ophthalmology and Oncology. This Program is boosted by the existence of state-of-the-art facilities at INEB’s Competence Centre in Bioimaging. INEB also provides services and technical training to research centers and industry in the areas of interfaces and macromolecules through the Services Unit for Interfaces and Macromolecules (SUIM), including advanced physical, chemical and structural characterization techniques particularly dedicated to the surface study of materials, down to the micrometric and nanometric level. INEB has advanced equipment for undertaking biomaterials research in the fields of nanomedicine and regenerative therapies. The scientific activity of INEB is periodically evaluated, since 1994, by an External Advisory Council, which is composed of reputed scientists from Europe and the Unites States. In the past 10 years, 9 patents, 29 prototypes, 6 products and 3 spin-offs have been generated from the work of INEB researchers. About 160 persons work at INEB, 54 of whom hold a doctoral degree and 55 are post-graduate students. INEB is a dynamic institute with a large majority of young researchers (79% of its researchers are less than 40 years old) and women (female/male ratio of 2.6). INEB has collaborations with almost 100 institutions worldwide, including hospitals, companies and many of the most relevant scientists and groups in Australia, China, Europe, Japan, South America, Canada and the USA, resulting in exchanges and co-supervision of post-graduate students and joint publications in reference international journals. Between 2006 and 2010, about 25% of INEB published works were in co-authorship with researchers from foreign institutions. On average, about 16% of INEB researchers are of foreign origin.
