3D Printing and Prototyping  -  INEGI - Institute of Science and Innovation in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering
This service centre provides for the manufacturing of body-shaped parts/prototypes for biomechanical applications, such as anatomical models, orthotic devices and/or sports equipment.
4C – Coimbra Coordinating Centre for Clinical Research  -  AIBILI - Association for Innovation and Biomedical Research on Light and Image
The Coimbra Coordinating Centre for Clinical Research 4C is a structure to support Investigator-Initiated and Industry-Sponsored Clinical Research complying with ICH GCP - Good Clinical Practice Guidelines and European regulations, namely Clinical Trials Regulation (Regulation (EU) No 536/2014), Medical Devices Regulation (Regulation (EU) No 2017/745) and ISO 14155. 4C provides the necessary logistical support to perform multinational clinical research in Europe.
Advanced Flow Cytometry Unit  -  IBMC - Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology
The AFCU provides investigators with equipment for acquisition and analysis of flow cytometric data and for cell sorting from single cell suspension using fluorescence. Furthermore, the AFCU gives training and consulting for researchers that intend to use flow cytometry in their projects; and helps analyzing and interpreting data. A number of applications, including the multicolour analysis of cell phenotype, gene expression, membrane potential, cell cycle, among others, can be performed.
Advanced Light Microscopy  -  IBMC - Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology
The Advance Light Microscopy (ALM) is an open access scientific core facility of IBMC dedicated to state-of the-art optical microscopy applications for biosciences. Multidimensional (6D) imaging of cells and tissues, high speed live cell microscopy, molecular analysis techniques (FRAP, FRET) and in vivo microscopy are some of the applications available to researchers
Analytical Service Unit (ASU)  -  iBET - Instituto de Biologia Experimental e Tecnológica
ASU combines several services including studies on candidate pharmaceutical products (GMP), as well as analytical development, method validation and testing of chemicals and biologicals for the pharmaceutical, food and chemical industry and academia. ASU includes expertises divided by three laboratories: Analytical Lab, Mass Spectrometry Lab (iBET acess through ITQB which is one of the institutions in the National Network for Mass spectometry) and Microbiology and Bioassays Lab.
Animal Cell Technology Unit  -  iBET - Instituto de Biologia Experimental e Tecnológica
Specialized human resources covering all relevant scientific areas in biologics development. Top level competences in cell culture, bioprocess development, downstream processing, assay development and validation.
ANIMAL FACILITIES  -  Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Beira Interior
The CICS- UBI animal Facilities comprise a quarantine room, a breeding area with rooms prepared for approximately 1600 mice and 700 rats and an experimentation area prepared also for housing mice (approximately 1000) and rats (approximately 220). All rooms are equipped with Individually ventilated cages. The experimentation area includes a surgery room. The animal facility team provides feeding, watering, daily cage changing and veterinary care.
Animal Facility  -  IBMC - Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology
The IBMC/INEB AH is a breeding and experimental facility. The AH holds 2000 cages of rodents and 2 to 4 rabbits. The AH has several strains of genetically modified mice and a considerable part of it are immunocompromised rodents. The AH provides care and maintenance of GMA animais, breeding services, veterinary care and surgical support to the diferent strains and experimental models. Polyclonal antibody production is available.
Animal Facility Unit  -  Life and Health Science Research Institute (ICVS)
The ICVS has a fully equipped SPOF animal house prepared for rats, mice and guinea pigs. The facility has several rooms for animal maintenance and experimentation, equipped and prepared for surgical and experimental procedures. The animal facility team provides services of husbandry, veterinary care and animal welfare counseling. Our institution also have facilities equipped and prepared for minimally invasive surgical training and research, by using in vivo animal models as pigs and rabbits.
Animal House  -  Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology
The Animal House is a shared resource that provides services in laboratory animal experimentation and husbandry, for all CNC and FUMC scientists using animals in their research. The present facility has a capacity to house more than 3000 animals (rats/mice). This facility offers the following services: complete husbandry, including feeding, watering, daily cage changing, as well as routine procurement, inventory and care.
Animal Model Facility  -  IPATIMUP
All researchers can use these facilities to perform research with animal models. The available mice strain is produced in our Animal House: an immunodeficient mouse model, with combined immunodeficiency in T- and B-cells, which supports the growth of human and animal tumor xenografts. Assay Development Unit  -  BIOALVO SA
BIOALVO developed a proprietary bioactive discovery technology based on the use of yeast as a model organism–Global Platform Screening for Drug Discovery (GPS D2). This technology is extremely flexible and customizable. Depending on the desired activity, new assays can be developed for the identification of new ingredients/molecules with proven potency and safety.BIOALVO has already implemented assays for a wide range of markets, such as cosmetic, pharmaceutical, nutrition and household products

The main goal of the Bioinstrumentation lab is to perform high-level interdisciplinary R&D in engineering and computational approaches applied to health, well-being, rehabilitation and sports performance, namely crossing several areas, such as Physics. Engineering (Electronics, Computation, Signal Processing), Physiology, Physiotherapy, Psychophysics, Sports and Human Movement sciences.

Biomedical Imaging Laboratory  -  INESC TEC
The main focus of the Biomedical Imaging Lab is the development of advanced image processing and analysis methodologies, particularly medical and biological images, with the aim of creating Computer-aided Diagnosis (CAD) tools to support medical decision making. The research activities at the Lab use several imaging modalities addressing different clinical departments including in Ophthalmology, Radiology, Gynaecology, Obstetrics, Cardiology and Gastroenterology.

This facility is specifically dedicated to research involving biological pathogens of level 3. It was designed to minimize the risk of personnel and environmental exposure to potential hazardous agents according to European and Portuguese legislation.
Biosafety Level 3 Unit of Specialized Services (BSL3 USS)  -  Life and Health Science Research Institute (ICVS)
The BSL3 USS is composed by a Biosafety Committee and Biosaftey Coordinators to assure that the European and International guidelines of biosafety and biosecurity are fulfilled. The BSL3 USS also provides education, training, and guidance for researchers. The BSL3 USS allows in vitro and in vivo experimentation involving biosafety level 3 pathogens. The BSL3 USS is fully equipped with tissue culture rooms and animal experimentation rooms for mice and guinea pigs.

Biotério  -  Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto
Biotério is an Animal Facility that houses laboratory animals used in research.There are 23 animal maintenance rooms which can house mouse, rat, guineapigs, rabbits, and fish, among others, in a conventional environment or in specific pathogen-free conditions. The technical team consists of four animal caretakers, a technical assistant and a veterinary.

The animal house provides support on protocol development and licensing, refinement and advice in experimental procedures and simple surgical techniques by certified researchers.

The BI (Bloco Instrumental) is an analytical laboratory located at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon. It was designed to support the pharmaceutical industry, but it also supports food, cosmetics and chemical industries as well as environmental control.
Blueclinical Clinical Research Partnership  -  Blueclinical Ltd
Blueclinical CRP is a network of hospitals and primary care centers that serve about 5 million people. All clinical research related activities are performed under a quality management system. This system aims to document and standardize, by means of written standard operating procedures, all the critical clinical research activities, in order to maximize the efficiency of the processes and to assure full compliance with good clinical practices and the legal and ethical requirements.
Blueclinical Phase I  -  Blueclinical Ltd
Blueclinical Phase I is a private and independent clinical research unit devoted to the conduct of studies in healthy subjects and early proof-of-concept studies in selected patient populations. Clinical research activities are performed in an exclusive and dedicated 29-bed unit by Blueclinical Phase I’s own staff, which has a wide and long experience in phase I studies in healthy subjects, including pharmacokinetics, drug interactions, food effect and bioavailability/bioequivalence studies.
Bn'ML-Behavioral and Molecular Lab  -  Life and Health Science Research Institute (ICVS)
Bn’ML company provides behavioral and molecular analysis services for both the academia and industry to assess the therapeutic potential of new compounds, using animal models of disease. Our services include: a flexible design of the study to evaluate the therapeutic potential of new compounds; the induction of the disease symptoms in animals; the administration of the compounds in animals; the evaluation of the therapeutic potential of the compounds at the behavioral and molecular levels.
C. elegans Shared Facility (ElegantLab)  -  Life and Health Science Research Institute (ICVS)
The ElegantLab is a combination of two rooms with controlled temperature and fully equipped to maintain and handle the animal model Caenorhabditis elegans. The research focus of this facility is mainly related to a better understanding of neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disease mechanisms, as well as to search for therapeutic strategies.
CEC - Clinical Trial Centre  -  AIBILI - Association for Innovation and Biomedical Research on Light and Image
The Clinical Trial Centre (CEC) performs clinical studies. CEC has dedicated facilities and updated ophthalmological equipment. Clinical patient-oriented research involves characterizing disease progression and testing new discoveries by carrying out carefully controlled research studies in patients, i. e., clinical trials. This includes testing not only new drugs, but also new methods, devices, imaging and surgical procedures as well as prospective, observational, longitudinal studies.
Cell Biology  -  BIOCANT - Biotechnology Innovation Center
The Cell Culture facility is specialized in cell culture in general, isolation of stem cells from the umbilical cord, cell viability assays and cellular characterization. It is mainly focused on running R&D projects in collaboration with research institutions and biotech companies. We also provide a Multiplex Serology Service specialized in the quantification of biomarkers, especially proteins in tissues and fluids.

Center for Predictive and Preventive Genetics  -  IBMC - Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology
At the outpatient clinic, patients and families with genetic diseases are observed and counselled by a multi-disciplinary team. At our molecular genetics lab, diagnostic, carrier, presymptomatic and prenatal tests are available for a large number of diseases. A quality management system is in place, and a formal request for accreditation has already been filed to IPAQ. The DNA/cell-line bank storages many thousands of samples, coupled with clinical and pedigree data.

The Centre of New Technologies for Medicine (CNTM) develops new medical diagnostic techniques with special emphasis on the area of eye fundus imaging. CNTM has developed the concept of Multimodal Macula Mapping and has been developing new tools to correlate information obtained from sequential fundus imaging and automatic lesion detection.The ultimate goal of CNTM is innovation in eye imaging and transfer these technological innovations to Industry and, therefore, to the market.

The laboratory for Advanced Molecular Modeling at Faculty of Pharmacy from the University of Lisbon provides resources to scientists or enterprises performing research which needs high-performance computing and storage. CORC – Coimbra Ophthalmology Reading Centre  -  AIBILI - Association for Innovation and Biomedical Research on Light and Image
The Coimbra Ophthalmology Reading Centre (CORC) focus its activities in grading fundus images and OCT images of the retina, as well as functional evaluations of the retina using mfERG. It serves as central Reading Centre for a series of multinational and multicentric clinical studies, mainly in Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) and Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), some of them performed within the EVICR.net.
CYTOMETRY LABORATORY  -  Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Beira Interior
This laboratory (24 m2) is equipped with a flow cytometer FACScalibur (4 colors), and a high-speed analyzer CyAn (Beckam Coulter) that can measure up to 9 colors. These instruments allow us to analyze biological cells, beads or other microscopic particles. With their multi-color capabilities, a wide range of flow cytometric research and clinical demands can be performed, such as immunophenotyping and cell viability analysis. Additionally, there is an AutoMACS cell separator (BD).

Dentistry Platform  -  Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra
In this service scientific research is carried out in tree Laboratories: Mechanical Testing, Hard Tissue and Forensic Dentistry. In the first, samples are prepared for various tests and methods of analysis, Aging and thermal and chemical fatigue of samples and materials can be performed. In the second they can perform the processing of biological samples following calcified and decalcified techniques. In the third a service of dentistry medical-legal expertise is provided.
Drug Product Evaluation  -  Hovione FarmaCiencia SA
The Service Centre Drug Product Evaluation performs the analysis of all products that are involved in the processes of drug product production and development, from the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (APIs) until the final drug product, for both oral solid dosage forms and inhalation products. This Service also performs development, validation of analytical methods, in process support, analytical support to galenic development and stability studies. The Service provides physical characterization of powders.

The Electron Microscopy Facility is part of the shared facilities at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência, Oeiras, Portugal. The facility provides centralized, high-quality room temperature transmission electron microscopy techniques and resources for all researchers at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência and within the Portuguese Research Community. Capabilities include conventional and cryo sample preservation, room temperature and cryo-sectioning and room temperature TEM.

AIBILI is the headquarters and Coordinating Centre of the European Vision Institute Clinical Research Network – EVICR.net. EVICR.net is a network of European Ophthalmological Clinical Research Sites, dedicated to perform clinical research in ophthalmology. EVICR.net is a platform for clinical trial research in ophthalmology in Europe and a useful Industry resource in order to promote the development of new drugs and medical devices.
Flow Cytometry Shared Facility (FlowSF)  -  Life and Health Science Research Institute (ICVS)
The FlowSF is equipped to high standards for cell analysis and enrichment by flow cytometry. Available equipment includes a LSRII (prepared to simultaneously read 8 different colors), a FACS Calibur and a AutoMACS Cell separator. The facility is prepared to analyze animal and human cells; the use of other cell types should be proposed to the FlowSF and optimized by the user. New users need specific training and previous approval before independently using the facilities.
Flow Cytometry Unit  -  Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology
The Flow Cytometry Unit provides technical support on flow cytometry. Currently, it is equipped with a Becton Dickinson FACSCalibur cell analyser and a Partec CyFlow Space cell sorter. The cytometry unit provides scientific and technical support for those wishing to use flow cytometry in their studies and is available to all CNC researchers, as well for those external to the CNC, after prior arrangement.
FLUORESCENCE MICROSCOPY LABORATORY  -  Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Beira Interior
This laboratory (31 m2) is presently equipped with an inverted Zeiss axioObserver microscope prepared to perform live imaging and also a confocal microscope AxioObserver LSM 710. These systems are prepared to perform FRET analysis and calcium imaging and are equipped with micromanipulators and microinjectors.

We start by looking for the best active ingredients and excipients to use, designing a theoretical formulation for each product.Then, the experimental procedure takes place and formulations are optimized according to organoleptic and sensorial characteristics, preliminary stability studies and of course, according to the client’s input.
FTIR and Mass Spectrometry  -  Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa
The laboratory of FTICR-MS and Structural Mass Spectrometry provides the highest performance technology for problem solving in health and life sciences. Provides support to food and wine industry, forensics and fundamental research in chemistry, biochemistry and biology. It is the main laboratory of the Portuguese Mass Spectrometry Network, a National Roadmap Research Infrastructure of Strategic Interest.

Genoinseq grants access to the full potential of state-of-the-art of next generation sequencing equipment, high throughput genotyping and bioinformatics data analysis. Genoinseq provides services or collaborates in R&D projects with companies and research groups. The unit has a multidisciplinary team of experts in sequencing and bioinformatics, delivering personalized solutions, from consultancy in experimental design to large scale data analysis with user-friendly outputs.
GMP Manufacturing - Cells and Cell based Products  -  Stemmatters, Biotecnologia e Medicina Regenerativa SA
Stemmatters provides cGMP services regarding tissue processing, manufacturing and banking (cells and cell based products).The facility comprises 250 m2 of qualified controlled environment rooms (CERs) and material pass-boxes. Our quality management system ensures that our products are consistently produced and controlled according to strict quality standards (EU-GMP Guide/ICH Q7 and ISO 9001:2008).We work with specialized distribution networks to assure high quality according to GMP guidelines.
Histology and Electron Microscopy Service  -  IBMC - Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology
This Core Research Facility is centered on Transmission Electronic Microscopy and Optical Microscopy with the ancillary equipment. Provides both the equipment and technical support to researchers needing high level optical and TEM to tackle studies either of cell or material sciences. Besides the instruction of researchers the Facility also offers training courses as well as guided visits to high school students. Facility is engaged on workshops or exhibitions for the public organized by IBMC.
Histology Shared Technical Facility (HistoSTF)  -  Life and Health Science Research Institute (ICVS)
HistoSTF combines several services in the development and execution of specialized histology techniques to industry and academia. The HistoSTF is composed of a team of 3 specialized lab technicians and is fully equipped for providing services in paraffin and methacrylate embedding tissues, frozen and vibratome sectioning and routine stains.

InOvoTS combines several services in the development and execution of specialized in vivo techniques designed for industry and academia using the chick in ovo model. Expertus, in vivo CAM assays is a spin-off of IPATIMUP that supplies a range of innovative custom made chicken embryo CAM (choriallantoic membrane) assays, as services for cancer research and anti-cancer drug screening. Specifically, CAM assays for the evaluation of angiogenesis (induced by cells and/or drugs), tumorigenesis and invasion.
IPATIMUP Diagnostics  -  IPATIMUP
Its mission is to provide optimal services of surgical pathology and cytopathology, molecular pathology, genetic diagnosis, and parentage and genetic identification. This Unit is accredited by the College of American Pathologists, while it is enrolled in other Quality Control Programs. It has state-of-the-art equipment, namely a Next Generation platform. It is a reference center for several pharmaceutical companies for specific analysis and works with most of the main Portuguese Hospitals.

Molecular Diagnostics  -  Life and Health Science Research Institute (ICVS)
The Molecular Diagnostics unit at ICVS provides molecular diagnostics of genetic disorders, namely of a neurodevelopmental nature (intellectual disability, epilepsy) but also encompassing malformations. We perform genomewide analysis of Copy Number Variations using Array Comparative Genomic Hybridization (aCGH), also known as molecular karyotyping, as well as gene-specific sequence or dosage analysis. We offer analysis of specific genes but also develop novel assays on demand.

In order to avoid the hurdle of having found a great bioactive and then not being able to resupply in the necessary scale, BIOALVO has developed an internal natural extracts manufacturing unit. The installation of NMR laboratory (82 m2) was completed in May of 2011 and has two spectrometers; one operating at 1H frequency of 400 MHz and the other at 600 MHz equipped with QCI CryoProbe, enables detection of 13C, 31P and 15N. The other probes available are BBFO+, TXI inverse and HR MAS. These spectrometers are ideally for study proteomics, genomics, structure and drug design. Also a SampleJet installed on 600 MHz is equipped with 500 positions allows us to performed metabolomics studies.

The sequencing service serves investigators and technicians who develop their work at IPATIMUP. This service is accountable for maintaining and handling the automated sequencers present at IPATIMUP facilities. This service includes the automated analysis of PCR and sequencing products (GeneMapper and Sequencing Analysis, respectively), by organizing the samples delivered on each day and distributing them through the appropriate instrument. It also performs sequencing reactions and its analysis.
