Analytical Service Unit (ASU) -
iBET - Instituto de Biologia Experimental e Tecnológica
ASU combines several services including studies on candidate pharmaceutical products (GLP), as well as analytical development, method validation and testing of chemicals and biologicals for the pharmaceutical, food and chemical industry and academia. ASU includes expertises divided by three laboratories: Analytical Lab, Mass Spectrometry Lab (iBET acess through ITQB which is one of the institutions in the National Network for Massspectometry) and Microbiology and Bioassays Lab

Animal House -
Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology
The Animal House is a shared resource that provides services in laboratory animal experimentation and husbandry, for all CNC and FUMC scientists using animals in their research. The present facility has a capacity to house more than 3000 animals (rats/mice). This facility offers the following services: complete husbandry, including feeding, watering, daily cage changing, as well as routine procurement, inventory and care.

All researchers can use these facilities to perform research with animal models. The available mice strain is produced in our Animal House: an immunodeficient mouse model, with combined immunodeficiency in T- and B-cells, which supports the growth of human and animal tumor xenografts. The Chromatography Service integrates multidimensional and hyphenated technologies to perform advance Method Development, Method Validation, In process Control and Final product Release analysis, Standard Qualification and Requalification, Impurity Screening and Characterization. All services provided within the Chromatography area are all under current Good Manufacturing Practices and using Full Qualified Analytical Systems.

The Service Centre Drug Product Evaluation performs the analysis of all products that are involved in the processes of drug product production and development, from the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (APIs) until the final drug product, for both oral solid dosage forms and inhalation products. This Service also performs development, validation of analytical methods, in process support, analytical support to galenic development and stability studies. The Service provides physical characterization of powders.

Egg-Lab - in vivo assays -

The Egg Lab Service comprises several chick embryo in vivo assays. Specifically, CAM (choriallantoic membrane) assays for the evaluation of angiogenesis (induced by cells and/or drugs), tumorigenesis and metastization.

Flow Cytometry Unit -
Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology
The Flow Cytometry Unit provides technical support on flow cytometry. Currently, it is equipped with a Becton Dickinson FACSCalibur cell analyser and a Partec CyFlow Space cell sorter. The cytometry unit provides scientific and technical support for those wishing to use flow cytometry in their studies and is available to all CNC researchers, as well for those external to the CNC, after prior arrangement.

The mission of IPATIMUP Diagnostics is to provide optimal services of surgical pathology and cytopathology, molecular pathology, genetic diagnosis, and parentage and genetic identification. This Unit is accredited by the College of American Pathologists, while it is enrolled in other Quality Control Programs. It is a reference center for several pharmaceutical companies for specific analysis and provides services for most of the main Portuguese Hospitals.

The Unit is specialized in the identification and quantification of proteins from complex samples, identification of post-translational modifications, and identification and quantification of metabolites. It is mainly focused on running R&D projects from both partners, as well as other collaborators (from CNC, Biocant, other R&D institutes and private companies).

Microscopy Unit -

The Microscopy Unit houses, maintains and coordinates most of the microscopy equipment of the CNC. The available equipment ranges from conventional light and fluorescence microscopes, to confocal laser scanning and laser microdissection microscope. All equipment within the Microscopy Unit is available to everyone working in the CNC and guest workers.

Proteomics and Mass Spectrometry -
IPATIMUP
IPATIMUP Proteomics Unit provides access to the analysis of different kind of molecules by MALDI mass spectrometry. The Unit is specially focused in the analysis of protein samples from solutions, bands or protein spots from 1D or 2D electrophoresis gels.

The sequencing service serves investigators and technicians who develop their work at IPATIMUP. This service is accountable for maintaining and handling the automated sequencers present at IPATIMUP facilities. This service includes the automated analysis of PCR and sequencing products (GeneMapper and Sequencing Analysis, respectively), by organizing the samples delivered on each day and distributing them through the appropriate instrument. It also performs sequencing reactions and its analysis.

At Hovione, the mission of the group is to collaborate with customers in the field of solid state, particularly in the characterization of solid phases of raw materials to finished products, from API to drug products in all stages of development and production. Innovation is continuously promoted.
