Brief description

The Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology of the University of Porto (IPATIMUP) is a private non-profit association of public utility, established in 1989 under the aegis of the University of Porto. The main mission of IPATIMUP is to understand the causes and evolution of human oncologic diseases to: 1) to go forward in the early diagnosis; 2) to maximize the treatment efficacy; 3) to improve the quality of patient's life; and 4) to reduce the cancer incidence in the population. The IPATIMUP strands of activity are: I) Research on Oncology and Population Genetics, interacting several scientific domains (Medicine, Biology, Genetics, Pharmacy and Biophysics); II) Development of Human Resources specialized in Oncology and Oncobiology; III) Diffusion of Science, contributing to the population's scientific culture; IV) Providing specialized diagnostic and consultation services. The Effective Associates of IPATIMUP are: Municipal Council of Porto, the Commission of Coordination and Regional Development of the North Region, the Portuguese Red Cross, the Luso-American Foundation for Development, the National Institute of Health Dr. Ricardo Jorge/Center of Medical Genetics Dr. Jacinto de Magalhães, the Portuguese League Against Cancer, the Bial Foundation and the University of Porto. The Adherent Associates are: the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Sciences, the Faculty of Nutrition, the Faculty of Dental Medicine, the Faculty of Pharmacy and the Instituto of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar, all from the University of Porto; the Hospital S. João and the Portuguese Institute of Oncology . The IPATIMUP was one of the four first ones Associated Laboratories created by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education in 2000. It is installed in a building with 4.000m2 in Polo 2 (Asprela) of the University of Porto.
