Brief description

IBMC is a multidisciplinary research institution that was founded in 1997 with the aim of bringing together researchers working within the University of Porto and affiliated hospitals to create a unique multidisciplinary environment that promotes research in the Life and Biomedical Sciences. In 2000 IBMC joined forces with the Institute of Biomedical Engineering (INEB), and created an Associate Laboratory known as the IBMC.INEB. The IBMC develops fundamental and applied research in Life Sciences with distinct applications related to health and biomedicine at the highest national and international level. It ensures a highly multidisciplinary environment that fosters the implementation of fully integrated scientific programs in order to pursue new and innovative approaches to fundamental Biological questions.IBMC hosts 39 Research Groups integrated into three thematic Units: Infection and Immunity, Neuroscience and Molecular and Cellular Biology. IBMC has also strong initiatives of translational medicine including projects, programs, contract research and services provided by the Center for Predictive and Preventive Genetics. IBMC is also strongly engaged with the public through outreach activities.
