Short abstract and comments

In this project we propose to study pneumococcal colonization patterns among children living in urban and rural areas of Portugal in the era of 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13). In particular, we propose to collect nasopharyngeal samples in cross-sectional surveillance initiatives to take place in early 2011 and 2012 in the Oeiras and Montemor-o-Novo municipalities. Characterization of the nasopharyngeal flora will include isolation of pneumococci, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, and Staphylococcus aureus. Pneumococci will be characterized by serotyping, antibiotyping and selected isolates will be genotyped. Interactions between microorganisms will be explored.

Potential uses/indications

The data generated by the current proposal should provide essential information on the contribution of PCV13 and antibiotic use to serotypes changes observed among pneumococci circulating in the community. This information should constitute an important resource for pediatricians and public health authorities.
