Short abstract and comments
The goal of this project is to gain insights on pneumococcal colonization patterns among the elderly living in Portugal. Primary objectives are: • to estimate the prevalence of pneumococcal nasopharyngeal carriage among the elderly population living in an urban area and in a rural area of Portugal; • to identify the most prevalent serotypes, antibiotic resistance patterns and genotypes of nasopharyngeal pneumococci; • to identify risk factors for pneumococcal nasopharyngeal colonization in this age group; • to determine usage of pneumococcal vaccines among the subjects enrolled in the study.
Potential uses/indications
The data will allow the creation of a baseline to monitor changes in pneumococcal colonization among the elderly following the introduction of novel pneumococcal conjugate vaccines.
