Short abstract and comments
PoliNanoBiofilm project seeks to develop novel polymeric-nanoparticles (NPs) with tailored release properties and high anti-biofilm Staphylococcus aureus activity for potential broad use as local drug delivery systems, in the context of prosthetic joint infections. Specifically, it explores biomedical polymers with different degradation rates that can be tailored to provide suitable anti-biofilm release profiles. Drug release profile from NPs is a major determinant in its anti-biofilm effect. Thus, assessment of antibiotic release data by kinetic models approaches is of paramount importance in the context of the project. Evaluation of NPs for their anti-biofilm activity by microcalorimetry assays and biocompatibility screening are also under evaluation.
Potential uses/indications
Potential broad use as local drug delivery systems in the context of prosthetic joint infections; set-up methodologies for nanoparticles antimicrobial and biocompatibility evaluation.
